At St. Joseph's, a small village primary school in Cumbria, we are committed to providing a curriculum that is both academically rigorous and socially and morally enriching. As a Voluntary Aided school, we are guided by our Catholic ethos and the Gospel values that underpin our vision and mission.

Curriculum Foundations

Our curriculum is firmly rooted in the National Curriculum, ensuring that our children receive a broad and balanced education across all subject areas. However, we go beyond the minimum requirements, weaving in our school's values and aims to create a learning experience that is tailored to the needs and aspirations of our community.Due to our mixed-age classes, we have carefully mapped out our curriculum content over a four-year cycle in Key Stage 2 and a two-year cycle in Early Years and Key Stage 1. This allows us to ensure progressive, sequential learning, where children build upon their prior knowledge and skills, developing a deep understanding that will serve them well in their future academic journeys.

Curriculum Drivers

Our curriculum is driven by a clear set of intentions that reflect our commitment to academic excellence and social and moral intelligence:

  • Ensuring children are ready for the next step in their learning journey, with a broad range of knowledge and skills
  • Developing fluent and effective readers, equipped to access the wider curriculum and enjoy reading for pleasure
  • Fostering fluency in number and the ability to apply mathematical reasoning to problem-solving, both in learning and real life
  • Providing diverse and enriching experiences to support the development of transferable skills, both academically and socially
  • Enabling children to communicate effectively and articulate themselves in a variety of contexts
  • Facilitating access to a vocabulary-rich curriculum to support language development
  • Offering a broad and balanced curriculum that motivates and equips children for future learning and life
  • Promoting physical and mental well-being, supporting long-term health and resilience
  • Providing high-quality learning opportunities with appropriate support and challenge
  • Developing considerate and respectful learners with a strong moral purpose

Curriculum Delivery

To ensure the successful delivery of our ambitious curriculum, we employ subject specialists to support our teaching in areas such as PE and music. We also plan for regular visits and enrichment opportunities, allowing our children to engage in first-hand learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

Furthermore, we offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, providing our children with opportunities to explore their interests and talents in physical, creative, and social domains.

Conclusion

At St. Joseph's, we are unwavering in our commitment to academic excellence and social and moral intelligence. Our curriculum is designed to inspire and empower our children, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive, both within our school community and as they take their place in the world beyond. For more information about our school and curriculum, please visit our website or contact us directly.
